Apple

Apple released the very first version of the i Phone on January 9th 2007. The months previous had seen masses of rumours and speculation as to the design, the functionality, and the features. Blogs, websites, and social networking sites had images of the ‘supposed’ look of the new handset, however, nobody could be sure as to whether such material was legit.

Immediately after its release, the iPhone won a myriad of awards, including Time Magazine’s ‘Invention of the Year’. However, Apple refused to rest on their laurels, and on July 11th 2008, they released the iPhone 3G, which was far superior to its predecessor. The ‘3G’ supported faster 3G speeds, however, it also had a much improved camera (with higher resolution and video capability), voice control, and better downloading rates. On June 19th 2009, Apple went one better (once again), and released the iPhone 3GS, which, again, added to the huge range of features on the previous two models. The original iPhone was discontinued and currently only the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are available, with rumours circulating on the launch date for the 4g model, set to be released in June 2010.

Apple currently run the iPhone operating system on the iPhones. The actual operating system is based on the Darwin OS that can be found in Mac OS X, however, the ‘Core Animation’ software from Apple’s Leopard OS is also included. A key point to be made about iPhone OS is that the software takes up little memory on the devices (less than half in fact) which means users don’t suffer from laggy and slow phones. Software applications from Mac OS X cannot be simply transferred to iPhones however, all applications and software that users want to install on their phones must have been programmed specifically for the iPhone (as it runs a different operating system).
